Do you want to be a MOPC Councillor?
Being a MOPC Councillor is a rewarding position that can help you make a change in your district. You will be the voice of the people at the grassroots level of government.
The MOPC comprises 12 districts spread over 2,300 km and represents about 18,000 voters. Its current operating budget is more than $23 million dollars, which allows it to provide services in many areas, including public works and development, building officials, bylaw, emergency services, finance, administration, and recreation. In addition, it is building an internet project that includes both wireless and fibre services for most MOPC residents.
During the municipal elections on Oct. 19th, 2024, one councillor will be elected to each of the 12 districts, and they will serve for four years. Council members are expected to attend council and property/finance committee meetings, held once a month at the MOPC Administration Building at 46 Municipal Drive, Pictou. Councillors are also appointed to other committees that meet at various times throughout the year. The majority of meetings are held in the evenings. All of our council and property/finance committee meetings are streamed live and then archived on our YouTube Channel.
The MOPC is governed by the Municipal Government Act as well as its own bylaws and policies adopted by the council. Council and committee meetings are open to to the public unless an item needs to be discussed in-camera. Typically, in-camera items involve human resources matters or legal contracts. The MOPC posts the work of council and its administration on its website, as well as its social media pages, Facebook, Instagram and X.
All of our social media accounts and website are updated daily by our communication officer in addition to publishing a quarterly newsletter.
